For Your Kids

Getting insurance as an unemployed adult can be a confusing process.  Programs for children, however, are far more accessible. Two joint Federal-State programs — Medicare and SCHIP (State Childrens Health Insurance Program) — make it possible for children under the age of 18 to gain comprehensive health care at little or no cost.

These programs are intended for low-income households.  The threshold varies by state, but in general your kids qualify if your family income is under $34,000 (for a family of four).  In some states, the threshold may be even higher.  According to Insure Kids Now!,  a service provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the children of unemployed adults will almost always have a health insurance option provided the parents are not collecting substantial residual income.

Coverage varies by State, but typically includes:

  • Diagnostic screening and preventative services
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital care
  • Physician visits
  • X-ray and laboratory
  • Emergency services
  • Prescriptions

In addition, most states also cover:

  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Medical equipment
